What are some high school courses that might help me achieve a medical career in the future?

Hi, I'm an 11th grader in high school and I would like a career in medicine such as a physician or a doctor and I wanted to know, what are some college courses I could take that would be beneficial in pre-med or med school, aka courses geared toward a medical career? I have already taken AP Bio and am currently taking AP Chem. Thanks! #doctor #medicine #premed #medschool

Hi Maria! I agree with the previous comments, and it's great that you're taking AP classes. They really allow you to explore foundational classes for medical school, you will be taking these classes in college on the premed path. At my high school there was also Anatomy and Physiology, if you can take that as well you can get experience in dissection, which is kind of like introduction to a very minor surgical procedure. If there are any clubs or organizations at your high school that include science based topics/concepts definitely join them as well. They will allow you to become more integrated for a premed path before college. It sounds like you are focused and know what you're doing, keep up the good work!

Best of luck!

AP science courses will help prepare you for the medical school pre-recs. Those AP classes include bio, chem, and physics.
Thank you comment icon Dr. Weinheimer, your advice is on point! I agree with taking AP science courses to help propel you for medical school. Sheila Jordan

Richard’s Answer

Take as many AP or IB courses in high school. You have a lot of years of education in front of you and getting college credit in high school can save you time and money.

High school courses are probably close to worthless in terms of qualifying for a health care career.

Estelle’s Answer

I agree with Richard and Rachel. Get those AP credits towards your college degree. All your science classes (chemistry and biology) lay a nice foundation for medical school.
