How can I combine a love for learning languages, art, and possibly medecine into a career?

Hi! My name is Zoe and I am a senior in high school, so I am starting to consider job options and colleges. I am passionate about French and Japanese, and I would ideally love to learn more languages like arabic; however, I do not know what kind of career I could pursue with languages. If it helps I love drawing and I have considered premed because I am interested in anatomy and how the body functions. #foreign-languages

Hello and good luck in your career. I'd like to start my response by stating that I'm not an expert in the field you are considering. That said, I have a suggestion you might consider.

Last spring, my son had a concussion and we went to the hospital. As is sometimes the case, it was so crowded that there weren't enough rooms in the emergency room. He was assigned a bed by the nurses station "in the hallway". The doors to a lot of the rooms were open. We overheard an interaction that took place through the "computers" that the nurses and doctors rolled around the floor.

The patient didn't speak English and asked for an interpreter. The interpreter was consulted through the computer. The doctor, nurse, and patient were able to communicate with one another through an online interpreter. That truly speaks to a gap...or an opportunity for you.

If you're interested in medicine, but not sure you want to make the commitment to go to medical school, you might consider continuing to foster your interest in languages and still take a class here or there so you can learn the basics on medicine. I don't know what type of background you'd need to be a medical interpreter...but it could be an option to consider and look into.

Best wishes!

Thank you comment icon Thank you! I will research that. Zoe
