While it is never truly too late to change your major, keep in mind that it becomes more difficult to graduate on time the later you make that decision. However, this shouldn't deter you from changing your major if you are unhappy with it! Your college advisors should work with you to complete all the requirements in a timely fashion.

It is never too late to change your major but I will say the best time to change is after your Sophomore year which is when are your prerequisites are completed before entering into your major. This way you will not need to add more time onto your 4 year experience.

Hi Phuong,

It is never too late as long as you can afford the time and expenses. Usually, the work you have done in the first two years will almost all count as core requirements and electives towards your new major. Depending on what you have taken and local requirements, you might have another semester or two of extra courses to take to complete your degree.

(Hint: consider taking your original major as either a double major or minor if you have done significant work in it. It may not require a huge amount of extra effort, but it gives you some official recognition for it beyond simply GPA.)

Perhaps most importantly — think about why you want to change majors. If it is because you have found something you like more and can do well in, then you may want to switch. The extra effort will likely pay off in the long term if you choose a more satisfying career path.

Good luck!

Hi Phuong,
Great question! It's never too late to change your major. I think the best time to change your major would be by your sophomore year. Mainly because your first two years are built around general education/foundational courses. Once you reach your junior year it definitely gets more challenging to change your major, that said it is still obtainable. If you change your major after your sophomore year, just keep in mind you might have to stay an extra semester/year to reach your credit requirement to earn your degree. You can also take winter or summer courses and even add an additional class to a 15 credit semester to catch up too, if you were to make a change to your major and remain on track.
