Where should I start? What can I use to help myself more?
I don't know how to start my career and how to start in this field. I want to be a graphic designer or an editor because I do both of those in my past times, I'm not sure how to move into a professional setting with it. #graphicdesigner #editor

To get started in graphic design or editor you'll want to research training programs available in your area and also requirements needed. Each state may have different requirements.

Hi Sarah,
As someone with degrees in both graphic design and journalism, I want to encourage your pursuit of either or both careers. I have been a medical book editor, helping physicians and surgeons write books to teach other physicians and surgeons, for over 20 years now. I have loved almost every day of it.
I get the sense you are young. Assuming I am right, I would suggest you start by finding out as much as you can about both careers. Maybe someone in your church is an editor or graphic designer, and you can interview them about what they do. Maybe get a summer job with a publisher, ad agency, newspaper. Don't be afraid to approach people who do what you like and ask them a few questions. Almost all of us are happy to chat about what we do, what we like about our jobs and what we don't like. Ask them how they got started.
You will need a college degree in either field to get started. Looks for colleges that have both majors. Read up about the majors and what they require. Email a professor and ask for a phone interview.
Finally, be open to everything. You might decide next month to be a veterinarian, or a pilot, or a baker. Be your best at whatever you decide you want to do and enjoy it.
Good luck,
Tim

Hi Sarah!
Tim gave you a great answer!! It's pretty awesome that he is familiar with both career paths that you mention!
I agree with Tim wholeheartedly right down to how to network using church or school, summer job, etc. All great advice! To give you an idea of opportunities for graphic design, you could be a:
Graphic designer
Creative director
Production artist
Art director
Product developer
Marketing specialist
Multimedia artist
Freelancer
Editors seem to be found and work everywhere. Editors work in publishing, sales and marketing, manufacturing, government, law, education and really, all kinds of fields. When you're an editor, you can work on specific types of content or you can edit general content.
As far as how to get started, Tim also had a great suggestion there!! If you already have a college you're interested in attending, I'd start looking into their programs for both editing and graphic design. Plan on at least a 4 year degree!
Good luck!!

Check out Fiverr.com - Particularly writing and editing gigs. Study what other people are doing and offering.
