Holly’s Answer

Thank you for the question. First off a travel agent is a person that sits at a computer and plans trips for other people, by using multiple means of transportation to arrive and depart from different place. A travel agent does not travel. Jobs that travel are truck driver, the military any armed forces, hospitality jobs like cruise ships, or sometimes business persons travel for business. If you want a job traveling, I would suggest another major in a higher field that requires traveling. Travel agents are people who sit at a computer and book trips for other people. They do not actually travel unless they are going on vacation. The computer software has done away with most travel agents we have evolved to hotwire, travelocity.com these are booking travel not travel agents. You can work at an airport and get good discounts. However, I suggest to go with a high paying field that travels. Many government agencies travel, like the FBI, or CIA, those would be fun rewarding jobs and you will see much. However, if you could elaborate more on what kind of traveling you want to do that would give me a better idea to direct you to the proper channel. Thanks so much. The Best.!

Holly's description of a travel agent is accurate and maybe not something to pursue since it will be done with soon for the common man. Concierge services for high end people who dont have to travel thier trips might exists. But this is a low scale job.

Some thoughts are :

1) If you get a good education in journalism with emphasis on international events/politics you will be able to be a travelling correspondent to major networks or radio stations. This would also give you an edge in writing and you could branch off as a travel blogger or a travelling editor ( some newspapers/websites love editors with an international outlook for their more rounded perspective.)

2) If you are into any sports, becoming a professional athlete would have high chances of travelling to play the sport. Maybe you will be an Olympian one day.

3) Getting a degree in humanitarianism or international studies can open doors to organizations like the UN or UNICEF which will let you help mankind and live with a meaningful fruitful career. You could volunteer with organizations which does disaster relief to get a taste of what this is like and might be able to refine your thoughts of what you want to get an education on.

Reading magazines like "The Economist" and looking at international job openings and reviewing the qualifications they are asking for will help you aspire for great heights and think ahead and aim high for the education you acquire for yourself.

All the best !!

I'm a travel consultant we no longer call each other travel agents, since we give advice to everyone that wants to learn about a destination or a vacation location that they would like to visit. As a travel consultant I earn over $250,000 and I do travel a lot since I love it and besides that I educate my self about the destination so I can better assist my clients in regards to there vacations. Being a travel consultant is very rewarding, I travel over 5 times a years and I'm departing for Asia for 2 1/2 months to have a better knowledge about all of those destinations that lots of clients would like to go. I will be visiting Hotels, tour operators, sites(UNESCO World Heritage locations), restaurants, local places to mingle with the locals and learn about there culture. Yes there are lots of online searches, but that takes lots of time and now in days people don't have the time to do so, some travel consultants agents charges a fee (don't disagree) but still lots of us don't. Travel Tour companies, including cruise lines offers us discounted fares since we are there to learn and yes enjoy a little as well but it is part of our business.

Hi,

Another great job that involves travel is being an auditor.

You would require to visit companies or institutes in various locations. This at times, involves a stay at the required location for days or for weeks.

The job gives you a lot of openings in terms of interacting with professionals and keeping yourself up to date with the professional world.
