I want to be a Surgical Technologist, how will I go about pursuing that?

I am a high school senior about to graduate and I was wondering if there is a way to be sure this is what I want to do, and to get an idea of the procedures I need to do to get into a Surgical Tech program. Also, what colleges offer Surgical technology programs? #surgery #surgical-assisting #surgical-careers #surgical-technology

Heather, I would start with several career tests. These would analyze your personality and suggest the best careers that would fit it. Research the resulted careers and decide what fits you best. The links below are for several career tests.

Annette’s Answer

Heather,
Im a Surgical Technologist and went right out of high school and graduated as a surgical tech at the age of 18. I am 23 of age now with 3 years of experience making more money then I can imagine at this age. You are making the right decision to do this. I would recommend going to a trade school rather thru college and getting an associated degree because either way you get paid the same and college cost way more than a trade school.

Amy’s Answer

Since I graduated my surgical technologist program in 2018, it seems like most school programs are trying to create a 2 year program (so that its the equivalent to an AA or AS degree). I graduated and worked for 3 years in Florida and have been traveling the last year (which has been amazing). I would recommend this kind of work if you can handle blood without an issue and you can also (if you decide later you want to further your education) become a surgical first assist which allows you to do things the surgeon does - its basically the equivalent to a physician's assistant. But you basically need to get into a surgical technologist program, graduate, take a test about the basic things to become certified (the school typically helps you set this test up while you are in the program so you don't have to worry about it) and while you are in clinicals try to befriend and learn as much as possible from your preceptors that you work with at the hospitals/centers that you will be learning how to do surgeries in; from there when applying it is difficult to get hired out of school without experience but many hospitals need help right now and I think going forward. It is an amazing career and I wish you luck!
