Simeon’s Answer

You will be required to memorize lots of financial equations and concepts for starters. You'll probably be using a financial calculator to do the math, so the raw computational skill is less of an issue. Your best bet to prepare is to start memorizing these formulas ahead of time and start getting an understanding of how these formulas are used.

I would hope the university provides guidance for you on the pre-requisites. I'm guessing they will have intro classes and have books available for you. Business classes will include general finance, accounting, and marketing. So be prepared for those. Good luck!

Finance is a very interesting topic. It is divided into Corporate Finance and Asset Markets. Corporate Finance focuses on the balance sheet of a company where you learn how take decisions as if you are working in a company. This includes topics such as determining the optimal capital structure for a company (the debt-to-equity ratio), take investment decisions (choose financially rewarding projects) and managing working capital of a company (liquidity). Meanwhile, Asset Markets focuses on financial instruments markets which include stocks, bonds, commodities and derivatives. In Asset Markets, you can learn about valuing these assets, investment strategies and portfolio management.

My advice to you is to get into the habit of reading financial news (Financial Times, Bloomberg, WSJ,... etc.). This would help you understand more about finance and give you the confidence of making up your mind about the career you want to pursue in finance. Also, It is a good idea to get comfortable with mathematics and statistics because they are important in finance. I do not think you have to know finance before you study finance :) Usually at university, they will start with an introductory course and then go to harder ones in following years.

Best of luck. Hope you find this helpful.

It really depends on what aspect of business you will go into! Some majors are more technical than others, where you will be working with formulas and computer programming. No matter what you go into, the most important tool a student can have is a really thorough understanding of Excel. The future is technology, so find ways to strengthen your ability with GSuite, Excel, and slide decking. The ability to manipulate and perceive data is super important, so try and find ways to learn more about that. There are free certifications on LinkedIn and other online platforms. My final advice is to be confident in your teamwork and leadership skills, as that can take you far and is something that can't be taught!
