In addition to requiring a bachelor’s degree, physicians and surgeons typically need either a Medical Doctor (M.D.) or a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) degree. No specific undergraduate major is required to enter an M.D. or D.O. program, but applicants to medical school usually have studied subjects such as biology, chemistry, and physics. Students also may take undergraduate courses in the humanities and social sciences and may choose to work or volunteer at a hospital or clinic to gain experience in a healthcare setting.
Students spend the first phase of medical school in classrooms, small groups, and laboratories, taking courses such as anatomy, biochemistry, pharmacology, psychology, medical ethics, and in the laws governing medicine. So any courses in biology, chemistry, etc.

Hi Samyutka,
Its great to hear you're interested in medicine and there a few things you could do to get a head start! I would recommend to start looking at taking biology, chemistry as your subjects next year prior to applying for medicine. You could also try psychology or mathematics but biology and chemistry are the main 2. Its also a good idea to have an interest in anatomy!
I would also advise the following:
- Try and get some work experience to see what the role of a doctor actually is, what is their everyday life like at work etc, what qualities does a good doctor have?
- Try out some MOOCs ; these are online courses which are mostly free and provide you with knowledge in a particular subject. This link has some in how to prepare to medical school: https://www.coursera.org/collections/prepare-for-medical-school
Hope this helps and good luck!
