Most hospitals are run by nonprofit organizations. There are some that are privately owned. Here is an interesting post with more information:
"Its possible. No doubt about it. You don't need medical training either. In its basic form you will need very deep pockets and the ability to hire and very good senior team around you to get it up and running. Obviously legislative requirements are your first hurdle after money. Depending which country and state you are in is the beginning of the journey. However, it is certainly possible. I know myself of a hospital owned privately with a hundred or so beds and very active operating theatres and other advanced services. The actual build is the easiest part. Getting all of the permits is the longer journey. Each step of the way is regulated. Down to the color of the hose in the wall that carries oxygen verses what carries air. The wall material is regulated to ensure a certain time to contain fire. The water out of the tap is temperature regulated in the patient bathroom at a different temperature allowed in the hospital kitchen which is different to the water tempo allowed in the CSSD department. The backup for the oxygen must include a solution if the main tanks run empty. There needs to be more then a single power supply into the building under certain conditions. Meaning the outside wires come from different substations. This is much harder to achieve then it sounds here by the way. I think you get the idea. Heavily regulated, extensive planning. Only achieved by an extremely good project team, with an acutely strong operating manager to implement the program. As for money, the hospital I know of. starting price for a hundred beds with all of the first world infrastructure, assume $100,000,000. That's close to the number I know was needed. Good Luck."
