Some of the skills and personality traits of a successful detective are to have a strong sense of awareness and perception of surroundings and people. An intuitiveness and an ability to use available resources. You should be assertive and have the confidence to lead. You should be self motivated and disciplined. You need to have determination. You should be organized and have good time management skills. You have to be objective, not judgmental. You need to be inclined to solve problems. You should have a empathetic demeanor and have active listening skills and you need to have patience when dealing with the public and with frustrating situations.
Detectives almost always begin their careers as police officers. As you gain experience you'll want to hone these skills and personality traits.
