Do colleges really care if you didn't take AP classes in your 9 & 10 grade?

I didn't start taking AP classes until Junior year, and I didn't take honors/IB classes either. The only advanced classes I have taken are advanced Enligh 1/2 & 3/4, along with being a year ahead in math of the regular sequence. #college #college-applications #highschool

Thank you comment icon I myself did not take AP classes however the people that I know did struggled to balance the workload and pass the test to get the credit. My fiancé enrolled in our community college close to us and do classes there while in. 9-11th grade and had a better outcome grace wise and experience/workload wise as well. She graduated highschool a year ahead of her class and had 6 classes towards criminal justice pre-reqs that also counted as highschool classes. Nathan Simpson

Hi Diana,

You don't need to have AP classes to be successful. Many students, especially first-year students, go through the same struggles no matter what. Most of the students I work with come in with no college credit earned during high school. Being proactive is a great trait, but it's also OK to take college classes in college and not beforehand.

No. Especially if you have other things you can point too, that you did instead of AP's. They do want to see you challenge yourself, but most importantly they want you to be well rounded. So, if instead of doing AP's, you play sports, volunteer, get a job, join clubs or the theater, anything like that is looked at as just as important. It isn't all about class level, especially in freshman and sophomore year. But, my advice would be take an AP or two junior year. Not only does it look good, it also can save you money and time in college as the AP scores can count as full course credit.
