Rady’s Answer
However, it is worth noting that some aspects of interior design may involve elements of STEM, particularly when it comes to technology and construction aspects. For example, the use of computer-aided design (CAD) software and other digital tools in the design process may have a technological component. Additionally, knowledge of engineering principles, such as understanding load-bearing walls or the integration of electrical systems, can be relevant in certain interior design projects.
While interior design may not be classified as a traditional STEM career, it still requires a combination of creative, artistic, and technical skills. The field often falls under the broader category of design and is more closely associated with the arts and humanities.
Pam’s Answer
The STEM areas are Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. While Interior Design does rely on some math and technology, it is not considered a STEM career. Interior Designers understanding of Geometry is helpful when space planning, understanding 3-dimensional spaces and computer-aided drawing. Technology in the many software programs used for sketching, drawing and modeling has been a growing facet of I.D. for some time.
Aileen’s Answer
While Interior Design is not really a STEM career, science, technology and engineering are extremely valuable in creating materials, products and building systems that interior designers, architects and mechanical/electrical/plumbing engineers would use. The industry is constantly looking for innovative products that make spaces more energy-efficient, more green and sustainable, cheaper, more durable, etc. STEM careers can be involved in interior design in that way.
