What is your favorite part about Engineering?

I personally love the math of engineering. I just want to know if there is something else that is just as awesome as math when it comes to engineering. #engineering

Peter’s Answer

Hello, Samantha. When asked what I find most rewarding about my career in Engineering, the answer is obvious. Engineers often tackle challenging problems and are rewarded by providing workable, cost-effective solutions. In many cases these solutions measurably improve the safety and/or quality of life for people. This can range from identifying and removing a contaminant in a water to supply to upgrading a road to improve traffic safety to restoring the fish habitat of a degraded stream or river. Few professions offer the great sense of achievement and satisfaction that engineering does.

Good Luck, Pete Sturtevant, P.E.

Nicole’s Answer

Hi Samantha R. Thanks so much for your question. I see that you posted this question a little while ago so I hope my answer to you is still helpful.

My favorite part about engineering is that as a worker in that field, it represents a constant source of learning. If one acknowledges that the basic premise of engineering is about understanding how things work and, from there, finding ways to make "that working thing work better", then you may be able to see how engineering allows people who participate can not only solve a problem they are tasked with (big or small) but they can learn from the steps that they used to solve that problem to then solve either similar problems or follow a tangent where the problem is different but the underlying tools may be the same.

Engineering, to me, provides a way to collaborate and iterate, either with other engineers, or others who may not have as much technical experience but have other skill sets that can help to solve problems. As mentioned in the answer above, there is no shortage of places and spaces within which the principles of engineering can't be used. And for that reason, I am glad I made the decision I made to follow an education and career in engineering.

Good luck!
