I highly recommend working for at least 1-2 yrs before entering medical school. you should apply for jobs in either academia or industry for the purpose of gaining experience and to help you decide which area of research you'd like. Working in academia or in a lab affiliated with a hospital may allow you to collaborate with medical doctors who conduct research, so may better visualize your goal.

I recommend that you work for whichever sector you prefer (civilian, private or government) and learn your career and the responsibilities that come along with it. I myself am in the government sector and notice that high ranking leadership are usually doctors.
