What type of degree works with innovating and creating robotics systems?

Excellent Sean! Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering are the exact disciplines you should be looking at if you are interested in robotics. I remember my first Electrical Engineering lab was with using sensors to help drive a car through a maze.
Many of the classes you take in either discipline are perfect for robotics. Good luck!

As you outlined, for an undergraduate degree a focus in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and even Computer Engineering are great majors to pursue in order to specialize and gain the skills needed to work on Robots and Robotic Systems based on the various aspects ranging from mechanical (linkages, etc.), electrical (power, signal processing, etc.) to computing (control system, algorithms, etc.). I also know several robotic engineers who pursued a major in Physics or Mathematics, and later pursued a Masters to advance their skills.
Several universities also offer pursuit of Masters in Robotics Engineering (and even PhD's!), to specialize even further in robotics design.
