Is it possible for a student to become a doctor or research scientists and not have to participate in surgeries?

I am not confident that I will be mentally prepared for surgery, but I have always desired to become a doctor. I wonder if this is even possible if I I do not favor surgery? #doctor #data-science

Thank you comment icon You can become a research scientist who uses statistics or writes articles. For example, a research psychologist may publish educational articles for a journal and still be putting their doctorate to good use. If you want to be a doctor, you can easily help patients without cutting them open :) There are ways to diagnose patients, run tests, and analyze results. No blood-work necessary! Vera

Nick’s Answer

Absolutely. Plenty of research scientists do lab work only, working with pipettes and petri dishes rather than scalpels and bodies. If you're only interested in research and no practicing medicine, consider pursuing a PhD in a medical discipline, rather than an MD.
