Hi Samantha! I’m sorry no one’s answered your question yet. We're working hard to get it answered by Professionals with the best insights, but in the meantime I've included a couple links to relevant Q&A here on CareerVillage.org that should be super helpful for you to read through.

Michelle asked: Does it really take 13 years to become a pediatrician?, and one of the Pros who answered it said:

It may not take 13 years to become a pediatrician but it does take some time. After high school, you will want to go to college and be a premed major. Earning your bachelor's degree will probably take about 4 years. After you earn your undergraduate degree, you will apply for (and ideally attend) medical school - another 4 years. After you graduate from medical school, you will go into a residency. These take about 3 or 4 years to complete and you are still technically a student BUT you will start earning a pay check. At this point, you are looking at about 12 years of school but 3 of them - you are also a working professional...

Sheila’s Answer

Hi Samantha:
My son recently graduated from medical school and is now a Resident Pediatrician. Here are some key steps he took on his journey that may be of importance to you. . .
1) Make high scores on the SAT & ACT exams
2) Select a college/university that offers at least "Biological Science" (you don't have to major in Pre-Med)
3) Score well on the MCAT (Medical College Admissions Test) exam the "first time"
4) Apply to "all" the medical schools of interest
5 a) 4 years of Medical School
5 b) Find an Internship (paid or volunteer) over a summer
5 c) DO NOT limit yourself to where you would like to get residency Matched
6 a) 3 to 4 years of Residency
6 b) Fellowship is 3 to 4 years

I wish you much success on your journey. Good luck to you!

~ Sheila
