Calvin’s Answer

I suspect that the student is mostly responsible for the quality of his or her education. I have worked with great engineers that graduated from colleges with no real engineering reputation and also with poor engineers from some of the better engineering reputation schools. It is up to you to learn and apply the information that is presented. Also, keep in mind that the faculty reputation is over rated in many instances. One of the most brilliant teachers I had was so advanced that he had problems communicating the concepts to the student level, quite often they are so busy that the classes are mostly taught by graduate students, so it is irrelevant if your instructor is a noted engineer.

One of the best instructors I ever had originally flunked his first engineering course. He was great at communicating down to our level (he later earned his PhD and works at Los Alamos labs).

Thank you comment icon Thank you Calvin for your response. I am well aware I am responsible for my education and the quality of it. I have researched some schools and others I still need to research. I was asking for people's opinions and responses because maybe there was a school that I overlooked during my research. I am looking at smaller schools so that the "faculty reputation" is not so overrated. Randal Tyrese

Hi Randal, good for you seeking a great program!

If you seek the "Top" in, say, Mechanical Engineering, you'll consistently find MIT, Stanford and US Berkeley
one of many sources: http://grad-schools.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-graduate-schools/top-engineering-schools/mechanical-engineering-rankings

Civil Engineering will consistently list UC Berkeley, MIT, University of Texas (Hook em Horns! My graduate school), University of Illinois, Georgia Tech and Stanford.
http://www.topuniversities.com/university-rankings-articles/university-subject-rankings/top-civil-engineering-schools-2015

If you cast your net internationally, you'll find University of Cambridge, Delft and National University of Singapore!

Check out this hidden gem from my home state of NM -- New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology. They do amazing things and it is very affordable!

Allen’s Answer

My Alma Mater City College of New York is one of the top school and relatively affordable and located in NYC! Like the above posts have stated; what you put into your program will dictate what you get out of it. Yes, going to a top ranked school will raise the probability of success but your success is ultimately up to you!

Simon’s Answer

It's great that you would like to attend a "top" engineering school, but there are a lot of very good engineering schools in the US. I would keep cost in mind also. You don't want to be saddled with $200K of school debt. Look for schools with multiple engineering disciplines (including the area you are ontrrrsyed in) and then google that school to see what they have done. I have hired dozens of engineers from both elite engineering schools and not, and it inevitably came down to the individual and his/her performance. Good luck on your search.

Mahmoud’s Answer

Engineering is about practice. Look for three main things when you browse through respective schools: 1) practice-informed knowledge; 2) strong connections with industry and 3) value for diversity
