Career Choice/ Career Path

Hi! I am currently a junior in high school, and I am starting to think about what I want to study in college. At school, I am interested in psychology and music. My hobbies include singing, acting, and reading. I also enjoy being a part of a mental health awareness club called “Mind Matters” at my school. What are some career paths that align with these passions? #career-path #career-choice #college

Hi there! I'm happy to hear you have multiple interests :)
When choosing your college, it would be great to think about what careers your major is going to help you in.
For example, the first major I though about was Psychology. For this major, multiple careers arise in my mind:
- Psychologist, psychotherapist
- Social worker
- Counselor (for children, for families, for couples)
- Human resources employee.
- Teacher.
From my personal experience:
I'm a software engineer and I encounter in my work people who work in the Human Resources industry. Many of them have a Psychology degree. They help in companies in the process of hiring people and reaching out for them to apply to job positions. They organize events and take care of other processes like document signing for employees and keeping the data for each employee organized.

Regarding your interest in music, it's up to you to think about this: do you want it to turn into a career or would to like to keep it as a hobby? Do you see yourself working hard for it every day? Do you enjoy other things more?

I appreciate to see you are also getting involved in a club. Volunteering and extra-curricular activities help a lot when applying to jobs or internships. Keep up the great work!

Last but not least, your interests are dynamic and can sometimes evolve in unexpected ways. This is not problematic at all. Keep looking for new opportunities, it helps you discover what else you enjoy doing :). Other majors might suit you just as fine, for example: communication branches like Public Relations, Journalism, Marketing, English, Business Administration and Management.

Good luck! ❤️

Dana recommends the following next steps:

Think about what you enjoy the most doing, and what you feel you are best at.
Think about your love for music: is it a hobby or do you want it to become your career?
Google more details about each major. Most universities are happy to offer details about them and the careers that emerge from them.
Thank you comment icon Thank you so much for your response! It was very helpful, and gave me great insight on how to proceed from here. Emma
