Hi Acacia B.,

Science has been discovering and researching the sentience of almost all animal species. Animals think and feel much more that many people would want to believe. I agree with everything that Jofre said above. I think you might want to work with animals, is that correct?

Here is some really good information from a veterinarian's office: https://www.lonetreevet.com/blog/human-animal-bond/

The American Veterinarians Association certifies vets in animal bonding practice: https://www.avma.org/one-health/human-animal-bond

Please read through the links above. Keep in mind that when you are approaching any animal either tame or wild, to treat them with the respect that you would want for yourself. Look at their body posture. Be aware if they are looking at you.

Thinking about the human-animal bond may lead you to wonder about the practice of factory farming and eating meat. This is a great philosophical problem and one to consider for yourself. Personally, I do not eat meat and attempt to purchase humane eggs and milk etc. I am not suggesting that everyone become vegan. These are personal choices.

Here is a scientific article that goes into deeper analysis about the human-animal bond: https://academic.oup.com/af/article/4/3/32/4638688

If you have a dog or a cat (or any pet for that matter), get to know their personality. Sit quietly with them and send them kind thoughts. Apparently horses are especially good at interpreting human feelings: https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/322234

It is completely possible that your dog or cat can read your body and facial expression, can interpret the tone of your voice, and understand some of the words that you speak. So kindness and compassion are essential in creating a bond with an animal.

I hope you find this information useful and interesting!

Here is a story: when I was 26 years old, my father died suddenly and I found him on the floor of our home. I had to call the operator and she sent the doctor, police and ambulance. It was all very traumatic and I couldn't stop crying. At this time, my brother's dog, Max, was living with us. He was a 75 pound pit bull. You know, those dogs with the horrible reputation. At the end of that very sad day, I was sitting on the steps in the backyard, crying my eyes out hysterically. Max calmly walked to me, and in a way only dogs can do, embraced me by stepping over my legs and leaning into my face and chest. He stayed that way for a long time; holding me in my grief.

I hope you become a vet!

Best,
Sue, RN

Jofre M.’s Answer

Hi Acacia,

That's a great question. It looks that you are looking to build a friendship with a specific animal.

What I can tell you is that animals are like humans in regards to feelings and treatment. In their case, since they cannot rationalize like us, you have to focus on how you treat them and try different ways to uncover what specifically entertains your pet. Your approach should be always with love and caring. Do not mistreat them or scream to them. Be caring. Also try to play with them and by doing that, you will uncover how your pet enjoys to be entertained. Do not forget to be nice when feeding them. If you practice this simple methods, you will build a bond at some point and your pet will love you and respect you.

Good luck!
