One of the difficult tasks of being a licensed mental health provider is how much documentation is required. Each session with a client requires a progress note, as part of insurance and record keeping requirements. If I have 6 clients I see per day, that requires 6 separate progress notes. For many clinicians, this is a challenging and least enjoyable part of the work in helping others.

Another expectation of being a counselor is the understanding that you are not to give advice to a client. Often clients expect this and it can feel frustrating when it doesn't happen. However, mental health providers aim to help you understand your own goals, recognize obstacles and work on solving them. Goals for one individual could be as interesting as "What is the meaning of life" and "Why are we here" and another client's goals for treatment may include stabilization after substance abuse addiction or difficulty in parenting. Counseling is an interesting and varied job and no 2 days are the same.
