How hard? I would turn that question around to ask how easy to look at being an entrepreneur. When it is asked in this manner, being an entrepreneur is now seen to be an opportunity more than a challenge?
An entrepreneur is someone who wants to be independent, loves the opportunity to be creative and innovative and is not afraid of challenges because they see all problems as a key hole to an opportunity. Being an entrepreneur also means being open to competition and knowing that risks have to be taken at all times to be successful.
To be an entrepreneur and how long will it be to be considered successful is dependent on your resource, perception, mental strength and general ability to take the long haul. This means a different attitude is required as compared to a salaried staff where there is sometimes complacency setting in because there is security in getting a monthly paycheck.

I think how hard it is to be an entrepreneur is a tough question as it depends on what field you go into. I coach a lot of teens and young college grads who want to jump right into entrepreneurship which is a rough thing to do unless you were raised in or taking over a family business. Even then I believe it is best to work in a few companies to see how things are done, and to see where you can create a niche for yourself. Once you go down the route of being your own boss, many companies will no longer new interested run hiring you because they will not believe your commitment. Keep in mind most new businesses fail, so that is another factor to allow for.

Anything in life is challenging and hard at first so whether if you want to be an entrepreneur or something else. However, being an entrepreneur isn't for everyone since it takes years of hard work, long hours and no recognition. In addition, as an entrepreneur you should expect failures at every step and lot of unknown challenges. The key is to never quit but to know when to quit. It is not a profession which is glamorous but it is rewarding if you overcome the challenges and keep going.
