Tyler’s Answer

Hey Jessica,

It depends on the company and what type of journalist.

For example – if you're a beat reporter who covers local government, a lot of your day-to-day is going to meetings and listening to local politicians and citizens, and figuring out the news of the day to write about to alert the rest of the readers. Then, it's taking that information and talking to more people to either get more perspectives on the story, more details or sift through any potential problems/gaps/misinformation out there. You may also be writing a bit if you have a deadline for a story that night. That takes time as well because it'll include transcribing interviews and doing the research before actually writing any words.

Some other types of journalists include data journalists (lots of number crunching and recognizing patterns), photojournalists (going to locations, taking photos, editing photos) and videojournalists (finding a compelling video to shoot, editing the video, adding graphics, publishing video).

There are a lot of different journalists out there who do a lot of different things day-to-day. The No. 1 thing all journalists do, though, is tell a truthfully story to present accurate information and help give a voice to the voiceless.

Hope this helps!

Tyler provided some great information. Here are some other parts of the job.
Journalists have to come up with ideas for articles. You may begin the news cycle with a meeting with editors, where you suggest and defend ideas for stories. Editors usually will assign you story ideas, but good reporters also come up with their own.
You will also spend time revising your articles. This is normal work. Editors may ask you to find more evidence for what you report, or for your conclusions. They will also ask you to rewrite your article to make the text easy to understand, more detailed, or read better.
