Hi Jessica! Many students have the opportunity to start taking journalism classes in high school. My first journalism class was photojournalism (yearbook) in 10th grade. I stuck with it throughout college by writing for my college newspaper and yearbook, and I even got an internship at a medium-sized newspaper in my hometown. That experience really helped me explore my interest in journalism because I got to try many different things outside learning about journalism in the classroom to be sure this was a field that I was passionate about. There are also lots of great websites online to keep track of all your writing samples. I like to use contently.com. That way, when you go to apply for a real job, you can send your potential employer a link to your portfolio that has all your writing samples in one place. Good luck!

Pick one that interests you and pursue opportunities down that path. For example, if you'd like to be a freelance journalist. the website, www.upwork.com is an excellent start.
