Which degree would be better for a person who wants to pursue actuarial science: a mathematics degree with a focus in actuarial science, or an actual actuarial science degree?
I went to a college fair and was presented with two different colleges, one with a mathematics degree with a focus in actuarial science, and the second having an actuarial science degree. I was just curious as to which would be the Bette option. #mathematics #actuarial-science

Truthfully, there probably isn't much difference in the degrees and, if you are certain about the actuarial field, it really doesn't matter which you chose.
If you are not sure about the actuarial field, then I think the math degree would provide you with a few more options.

If you definitely want to be an actuary, then I agree that the actuarial science degree might give a slight edge in passing more exams while in school, and introducing you to more job opportunities and internships earlier. However, the difference is probably very small, and I have lots of colleagues who majored in math or computer science, and even a few in physics and chemistry. It honestly does not matter at all as long as you pass your exams!

To be an actuary and successfully pass exams you have to be a self starter who can teach yourself the material needed to pass exams. The important thing is to learn how to learn and be ready to start the exams.
