What is being in a medical school like?

I want to go to medical school in the future. I'm curious about what it's like. Are you always up late? Was it too stressful? Did you enjoy yourself? Was it all worth it? #medicine #doctors

Hi Allison,

It is stressful, enjoyable, and worth it :)

If you are truly interested in a medical career, you will absolutely love medical school. Of course, there is so much to learn, and requires a lot of dedication, effort, and sacrifice. But, when you are studying what you enjoy, it becomes more gratifying and easy to do. I am sure everyone who has been in medical school, has spent nights and given up on fun events in order to study. My best friend in medical school and I would spend some weekends in the library, although it sounds awful, we always had a good time. In addition, these are 4 years that you will learn about yourself, mature, and make life-long friendships. You may consider volunteering in a hospital or clinic to see if you actually like medicine. If you do, medical school will go by fast, just have to take one day at a time...and keep in mind that in the end, you will have the exceptional gift of being able to make an impact on your patients lives.

Richard’s Answer

The first two years of medical school are mainly in the classroom with several hours of lecture every day and the occasional lab including cell biology lab and gross anatomy lab. The 3rd and 4th years of medical school are in the clinic or Hospital Ward. You rotate between the major Specialties in medicine. During the fourth year, you choose a specialty . You may do away rotations in that specialty in the different cities that you plan on applying.

Between lecture, lab and studying, the first 2 years will be grueling. Make sure to leave time for yourself to exercise, eat right and even some socializing.
There will be times during 3rd and 4th year when you will be frustrated by your continued lack of skills and knowledge but just remember that there will be plenty of time to master your specialty during residency.
