I want to play basketball in college, but at what point do I choose academics over sports?

I found the perfect school academically for me, but I'm not sure if I will be able to get on the basketball team. #college #basketball

Keith’s Answer

I won't say that you shouldn't worry about being on a varsity team in college, although I will say that very few collegiate athletes go on to play professionally. If you are not seriously considering playing professionally, many schools have intramural teams that will give you the opportunity to play, with a lower level of commitment. You may also want to look at schools with less competitive varsity teams. You may be able to get an athletic scholarship at a school with a less competitive team, while still being able to commit enough time to your studies.

Dennis’s Answer

You should never sacrifice academics as you will need to leverage that learning for the rest of your life. A small percentage of college athletes will go pro so a solid education will serve you well whether you are one of the few that make it professionally or not.
