While you can get a job with a film degree, it really depends upon the area (creative, technical) of filmmaking in which you're interested. That said, unless you're going to focus on the strict theoretical aspects of film, you'll certainly need, and want, to be actively involved in the making of films whether or not you go to school to study. There are pro's and con's about following a formal study of filmmaking at an accredited university versus avoiding that and immersing yourself in your own filmmaking. Formal study can certainly give you a strong foundation in the basics (theory, history, technical, creative). It may also provide you with an environment in which you can discover what area of the visual storytelling medium you wish to pursue. Regardless, you'll need an all-consuming passion to be a filmmaker. Best of luck!

Hi Madelaine,
You should include your film degree in your portfolio, resume or bio, whatever they request for an interview. You will receive an opportunity to work as an intern, and that will be voluntary. You should work hard, and talk with the assistant, creative executive, producers and founders. Because you will hear about future jobs when you will get paid. This means, of course, that you will have to pay your monthly bills by savings or working a part-time job. Many of us start working at restaurants or retail stores. Best wishes.
