I think I may want to go to medical school, but I am not sure. I want to major in something science or health related that will afford me the opportunity to start working right after college if I decide not to go to medical school. Any suggestions?

Hey Trish,
Have you considered being a bioinformatics major? The nice thing about this major is that you take math, chemistry, physics, biology and computer science courses that satisfy many job requirements as well as mesh well with being premed.
Biomedical engineering also opens many avenues for your future. However, if this option is not available at your university, you may want to choose bioinformatics. Data analysts are paid a great salary, so if medical school is not for you, it's a great backup plan.
What science majors are available at yout university? Are there any in particular that you are interested in?

Hi Trish! Great question!
I think an easy way to find out if you want to be a doctor is to just shadow one! See if you can tag along in a hospital or volunteer there to see what the day to day is like for a doctor. Its a great way to get a rough taste of what its like working in the medical field. If that's not for you, you can become a nurse or a physical therapist. There's many other avenues for medical careers that aren't doctor.
Good luck with your search!

Chemical engineering is an option. There is crossover between the medical school prerequisites so you should be able to graduate in 4 years, completing both the engineering degree and the premed courses.

My advice is to major in whatever field interests you and will allow you to maintain a good GPA. This may be business or marketing...whatever. You do not have to have a science related major to go to medical school. You just need the pre med requirements and a high GPA. Pick a major that will let you have a back-up job you would enjoy.
