Engineering *can be a global field. The vast majority of engineers will remain in one place most of the time. Travel tends to be less than 5% with very few exceptions. Three types of engineering that can travel are 'Sales Engineers', 'Field Service Engineers' and some 'Applications Engineers'. A Field Service Engineer will be specially trained in a particular technology or equipment and will have to travel to various places around the world to install new equipment or repair it. FYI - salaries tend to be a bit lower for this type of work (considering the travel is often 80%). Applications engineers may be called upon to assist customers in applying their technology to a design - or assist other engineers in solving technical problems. Once again, these people are usually subject matter experts, highly trained in a particular technology, component or process. They tend to be the most 'technical' of the three types. They assist designers of other products to make better decisions. Sales engineering is the least technical of the field and doesn't necessarily require an engineering degree. These are usually people that travel with sales teams to customer sites and sell technologies or products to customers. While the sales person has minimal technical knowledge of the product (and pricing), the Sales engineer tends to assist in systems level design or high level design to see how their particular product or technology would fit in with an organization, a design or a system. To specifically answer the question, the 'where' will depend on the company. Sales and Field Service will often be international - since everybody buys technology. Common destinations will be Japan, Europe, China, Korea, Mexico and any other countries that have more of a 'high tech' or 'manufacturing' based economy. Petroleum engineers are most often not based in the United States, but will normally be found in Qatar, Saudi Arabia and anywhere else where oil is refined or manufactured (which might also place you in the middle of the ocean, in Houston,TX or the middle of nowhere in the western US).

Simple answer is All over the world. An Engineering Degree is the most sought after career and there is an increasingly high demand for GOOD Engineers across the globe. There wont be any time when the demand will exceed the supply for GOOD engineers with great mindset. Achieving an Engineering Degree in any of the field would be a great start to one's career.

My experience is in Software field and Management , while I also achieved other Engineering degree in Electronics and Communication , particularly for my interest in hardware and microchips. I have a successful career in Software Industry while also running a non-profit org for a hardware firm , out of my personal interest.

Good luck!
