Football is a very competitive sport and equally there are many fighting for the various positions that would be available. So I guess the question is really. How do I balance football and a career path. Careers which may keep you near to the football and the players could revolve around Physical Therapy, Personal Trainer or other medical based. Also teams need publicists, lawyers, and executive secretaries.
Yet your college/ career choice doesn't need to revolve around Football. Focus on what you would like to do as a career if football wasn't in the picture. What would that look like. Choose a college which has both a strong football position and academic position. Try out for the team, don't get discouraged if your 1st year you are on the bench. (I have a friend who gave up on aspirations of football because his freshman year he was 2nd string and sat on bench. He didn't try out the next year and regrets it)
Now you have a parallel goal of Football Career and Optional Career.
Upon graduation from College hopefully you will be culled out to the draft. If not, below is a link for Minor League Football, which may be another way you can get noticed by the major players. Or have you heard about the Indoor Football League?
Yet now your Optional Career path can put you in a position to get a job and fund your aspirations to Football.
Coaching on a High School level is typically a supplemental income job, but would also keep you involved in the sport. Or you could look for opportunities coaching in both minor or major teams.
Growing up does not mean you have to let the things that you love go. It just means they my change their priority. My manager is in his 40's and plays Lacrosse on a local team; and he coaches youth Lacrosse team. So go for it, but be realistic that the percentages are stacked against you and have back up plans as opportunities appear and fade.
