What's the best way to decide what kind of medical doctor you want to be?

Many doctors I know say that they couldn't decide what branch of medicine they wanted to go into until residency. Why does it take that long to decide? What was your experience with deciding what kind of doctor you want to be? #doctor #medicine

The 3rd and 4th years of medical school are in the clinic or Hospital Ward. You rotate between the major Specialties in medicine. This is the time most students pick their specialty.

During the fourth year, you apply for a residency during your chosen specialty . You may do away rotations in that specialty in the different cities that you plan on applying.

That was the first time I saw an image guided procedure during 3rd year of medical school, I was fascinated by the intersection between medical imaging and treatment. I decided that I wanted to become an interventional radiologist. Now I get to perform image guided procedures every day including angiograms, TIPS, radioembolization of tumors with Y-90, and thermal ablation of tumors.

There are so many great options in medicine and there is no hurry to decide what specialty to want to go into. I was interested in OB GYN until medical school when I did my Family Practice rotation and fell in love with Family Practice! So stay open to the options available in medicine and above all else choose something you love and go for it!! Good luck with everything!
