While that is not especially common, it is not unreasonable that, during your first year working as a pediatrician and being in close contact with your patients, you would not catch a cold or two. Every person’s immune system is different, which is also true for the extent of your exposure to sick patients. All medical facilities have strict safety and cleaning protocols to prevent the spread of germs which are followed in order to mitigate the risk of spreading disease. It’s a noble profession, and in most cases, I have seen the rewards of the job outweigh the risks. Best of luck to you!

Hi there. I am a pediatric nurse and work in an urgent care clinic. We use strict hand washing techniques and make sure that we clean the rooms before we put another patient in there. Since we follow strict infection control measures, none of the pediatricians or nurses that I know of have become sick. I hope this helps! Thank you.
