If I go on a study abroad to China, can I still qualify for a security clearance so that I can work for a defense contractor?
I am eligible for a really good scholarship. It requires you to go on a study abroad program to China for 3 weeks. Will this disqualify me for a security clearance? I have heard good things about being a computer engineer for a defense contractor. Does anyone have advice on whether it is better to work for a private industry or for a defense contractor? Thanks. #computer-engineering #state-department

Having worked at both a defense contractor and what you're calling private industry (defense contr is actuall also private industry), I'd say I much prefer not defense industry. That said it's not that bad.
I never had clearance, but worked with many who did. I doubt going to China for 3 weeks makes it impossible. Just if they ask you about it, don't lie, explain exactly what went on. They'll stick you on a lie detector machine thing. It's fine. E.g. if you've smoked pot, that doesn't disqualify you, just don't lie about it. They're interested if there's anything that could compromise you (e.g. on drugs, if you have an addition and could be turned, or if you went to China, if you made lots of good friends with spies or party members, etc).

Traveling to China will not automatically exclude you from getting a cleared position.
Disclose it on the SF 86 or whatever intake form they give you.
• Note the dates
• Who did you travel with (just a couple of people with their contact info, Address, phone number)
• What cities did you visit
Good Luck!
