I majored in Environmental Science and have enjoyed all of the aspects of my career. I worked in Public Health doing communicable disease control, well water analysis, and private sewage system evaluation. I transitioned to working in the private industry focusing on employee safety and environmental controls in the construction, transportation, and manufacturing environments. The best thing for me has been being able to do similar but different things in my career because of the broad education I received in Environmental Health Science. There is a variety of avenues you can take the degree allowing you to explore what drives you as a person when you start your career. You then have the ability with this degree to work in a variety of workplaces from indoor, construction, and in nature.

It is a great degree field with wonderful career diversity options.

Eloisa’s Answer

Hello. Environmental Science is a very broad career field. I majored in Environmental Science with a focus on chemistry and fresh water biology coursework. I started my career working in a lab and so was able to gain experience in how to run water quality analysis as well as how to follow testing protocols. I then moved on to working for the local city government where field work was very heavy. This allowed me to learn about different media such as water, waste, spill response, training, and environmental regulations. I then moved on to the private sector to develop full EHS (environmental, health, safety) programs and cultures. The best piece of advice in starting in the Environmental Science field is to keep in mind that because it is a very broad field, there are many jobs that can offer skills to build upon. Look for entry level jobs that can provide you with hands-on training in the field and how it ties in with current regulatory standards. Having both field experience and foundational knowledge of regulatory standards will provide you with a solid foundation to pursue higher level managerial roles.
