Jacquelyn’s Answer

Hi. Engineering is a very disciplined area and will open the door for many different technology careers. There are a lot of different things that you can do with an engineering degree. You have to first decide what interests you and then pursue that specific field in engineering, but don't let it limit you to what the future may hold for you.

A lot of engineers start out doing engineering and then later decide to get their MBA, so they are rounded out with the technical and business backgrounds together.

Don't be intimidated by how fast the technology changes. With a firm technical background there is a lot of things you can do in the future.

I think something that doesn't get enough thought right now and will become increasingly important in the years to come, is sustainability and impact. The lack of that kind of thinking has lead to a lot of our current problems, and it's going to take a major shift in approach to go forward in the future.

James’s Answer

I think the biggest challenge people face when choosing to enter into the Engineering field is keeping up with everything that is going on. Technology is advancing at an exponential rate and it is only a matter of time before Artificial Intelligence further increases that rate. Just this week we've found that Google's AI is generating its own encryption. Its very likely that machines will be assisting in the creation of new technologies in the future.

I would encourage someone interested in Engineering to embrace learning and be prepared to learn continuously. Ultimately, I believe speciality will be favored over generality, given the pace of technology. Pick something you love and you're willing to learn a ton about and become really good that, whether its ML, UI, Databases, or IoT.
