How do you find a good place to intern for Biology?

I know that I could probably find a professor that could use my help, but how do I approach them so that I can work by their side. It would be great to be paid, but I don't have to be(that's more a graduate degree thing anyway). I'm about to graduate high school and would like the lab experience. Any time of year. #biology #internships #college-bound #marine-biology

First, I would definitely ask that professor for ideas. Someone you know or knows you is always the best first step. Don't be shy as this is your life, career, and new beginnings, so approach them for ideas. I would approach them generally with a "I want to find a summer internship to gain some practical experience in biology research, do you have any ideas"? Let them suggest something rather than asking directly about working with them - much better if they come to that idea on their own. Of course, if the soft touch fails, be more direct and ask. Let your excitement about your chosen profession (and theirs) shine - everyone likes to work with people that are passionate about a topic.

Second, set yourself up on linkedin - good way to start developing your future resume (only use career type information, no personal details not related to business settings) - don't worry if it seems short or not complete, we all have to start at the beginning at some point! Start by finding adults that you can add to your contact list (not called a friend list as this is business). Each contact adds to your potential network as you have access to all of their contacts once they accept you. As you develop more experience (focus on your coursework for now), your profile will fill out.

Use the search or advanced search buttons and add in internships, biology, Boston (or some combination of them). I just did that and 9 popped up. One I noticed is at the aquarium - your question indicated an interest in laboratory research, so add that as one of your searches. You can also play with the linkedin search buttons to find companies that hire biologists - give you an idea of jobs available as well as the types of companies that hire people with biology interests. Once you find one or two companies, go on those company websites. It takes some work but this is the right time of year to secure a summer internship - so best of luck!!
