Shelley’s Answer

Abril, Nursing is fulfilling because the nurse makes it fulfilling. Patients are sick and can be very challenging to care for. Patient families can be rather demanding. And frankly some of the things that you have to do as a nurse are kind of gross. Having said that, working on a team or unit of nurses and staff can be pretty fun. I would say most "cranky" nurses are bored and haven't explored other nursing specialties for various reasons. That is the best part of nursing. If you start in one specialty, such as bedside, and the work dynamic or you lose interest in it, you can shadow another area, if you like it, show interest and you can possibly transfer and train in that area. Many times as personal life develops, needing a change in your work schedule prompts a change in jobs. Nursing many times can accommodates that change without changing employers.

Nursing is also fulfilling by the confidence boost of being a nurse. The things you know you can do, have done and are confident you can figure out to do. Take pride in being a nurse. I have been in several specialties as a nurse and currently work between a few departments and I look forward to the variety in jobs and the people I have the privilege to work with. Fulfillment is about your attitude and you will eventually find the right fit.

What ever career you choose, you choose to make it fulfilling. Good luck!

Yes it is very fulfilling. When you can see someone improve in their health, because of something you did or assisted with is the best feeling in the world. Please don't misunderstand there are days in any profession that you want to walk away and never return. You celebrate the member's/family's successes and mourn the losses.

Yes, it is a fulfilling job, depending on which part of the world you want to practice. If you wish to practice in North America, Europe, British or Austria, it is very fulfilling, as Nurses are highly recognized and respected in these areas compared to other parts of the world. You can never regret being a nurse in these geographical areas
