Suzanne’s Answer

Hello Arely S.,

This is Sue and I am a retire RN.

If you have the diagnosis of schizophrenia, I hope you are getting excellent medical care and that the illness is well controlled.

The easy answer to your question is yes, you would be able to work as a night nurse. Each state has their own rules and regulations around hiring people with disabilities.

The nurse and their psychiatrist would be the ones to determine if it is safe for the person with schizophrenia to work as a nurse and especially work as a night nurse. If the persons psychiatrist feels it is safe, then it is acceptable to apply for those types of positions.

Here is some really helpful information from the state of Texas:

I hope this is helpful!

Be well,
Sue, RN, MSN

Alison’s Answer

Hello,

For a few years I worked night shift in the ICU as a registered nurse with a peer RN who has schizophrenia and was being treated with medication. She was an excellent nurse, followed her medicine regimen and had no obvious issues completing her duties as an RN. She was well respected on the unit. To echo what Sue said, working closely with your Doctor/Psychiatrist and following your medicine regimen closely is key. I hope this gives you some peace of mind that it is absolutely possible for you to achieve your goal.
