algebra is a part of mathematics.
It is for solving problems . where it differs from math with numbers is that you can solve problems before you know all the numbers involved.
For example if you know the cost of 100 items find cost of each item. the beauty of algebra is you solve this problem using symbols like x,y,z etc
after that when you know the numbers, substitute them in the answer. You don't have to solve once for each item. in the above example, if they are 100 fruits, or 1000 cars etc. you already have the answer just put the numbers in to get the answer.
Of cours it is a simple example but It is a very power ful tool. In the begining people feel intimidated but once you understand , it is a joy to work with.
