Hi Patricia! It's great that you already have an idea of what you want to major in once you get to college, I personally had no idea what I wanted to do when I first started! That being said, freshman year is a great time to explore different kinds of classes to see what really resonates with you and what you don't like so much. I would encourage you to take a variety of classes, including ones in Digital Marketing, to get a feel for different majors. You may even surprise yourself and find something you didn't know you'd like! Don't feel too pressured to find the right fit right now, you still have time, and even if you decide to apply to colleges with a declared Marketing major you can always switch majors if you discover it's not a good fit for you. If you want even more information about Digital Marketing or what the field looks like, I would encourage you to do some research to get a better sense of what the industry is like. This could mean watching YouTube videos about what Digital Marketing entails, talking to people in the field, or reading articles. Whatever you decide to do, just know that the skills you will learn in most majors can apply to a wide variety of fields and industries.

It's not unusual to go into college and think about what you are doing and realize you completely hate it. Its pretty difficult to actually know what you like without trying it out and taking classes on the subject. One of my friends is going into their junior year and only recently picked their major after switching almost two different times because they realized they didn't like their initial major choice at all. As a high schooler, you definitely have plenty of time to pick your major and I would just recommend going with whatever you are most interested in right now. Most colleges will give you the option to switch your major once you get in so even if you don't end up liking whatever major you picked, you can always switch to one you like even more.

Hey Patricia, I would recommend that you try to get some kind of experience in your desired field as soon as possible. If you can meet with people who already work in the field and pick their brain that would also provide a great opportunity to learn more about the field. Finally join clubs and network with people who have similar interests to compare plans with them. Best of luck!

Hi Patricia!
As an incoming senior in college, I can tell you that this is totally normal! I knew that I wanted to go into business as well, but wasn't sure of the concentration. I would recommend researching different careers that you're interested in, and taking note of what you can study to get there. If marketing is what you're most passionate about, then take on the major! You'll take a few introductory classes in your first semesters, along with some classes in other fields of business as well. If you try it out and enjoy it, then stay in it! Marketing is a great field to be in. If you find something more interesting, that's totally okay too! You can always switch your majors - I know a lot of people who weren't completely sure of what they wanted to do until their third year. Also keep in mind that you are not limited to certain career paths with your major! Many people end up working jobs that are not directly related to their major if they found a career along the way that they wanted to take on. Just be open to different options!

There are several good responses here. If you focus on your freshman year then it will all come to you. In your first year, find something you like and purse it but also take a course or two in something which you might thing is not in your skill set. For example if you like history and are focused on taking that as your major, perhaps also look into physics 101 and see if that might pique your interest. Remember you can always change your major while in college. Just make sure you are comfortable with a major by the end of the sophomore year or else you may have stay in college a bit longer.

I think the best advice is to first relax. Most people don't truly know their majors until 1 or 2 years in after entering college. So I think a good place to start is with your advisor. They have plenty of resources that can help you pick a major. And then make a list of everything you love and then google college majors and pick a few and do some research. And lastly talk to friends and family for advice.

Hi, I had the same problem when I was in college and trying to decide on a major. I waited until the last possible second and I ended up picking one that "didn't involve math". I chose sociology because I really enjoyed those classes. Today, I work for Visa which really does not have anything to do with my major. I would recommend to lower the stakes and try not to feel the external pressure. Things will work out as they should. Do something you enjoy and if it doesn't feel right, its OK! Nothing is permanent. If you are in a major you do not like, you can change it. If you are in a job you don't like, you can find a new one. If you are in a city you don't like, you can move. Go with your gut.

My advice is to not worry about it too much!
I know it is very daunting to think about your major before you have taken any classes. Most colleges have flexible class schedules early on which lets you switch majors relatively painlessly if you want to. For specific advice about what major to go with - do something where you actually enjoy the classes. I started out in a more technical major and realized I enjoyed the finance classes more. So I switched!

Hi Patricia,
Great question! I think it's quite common to question if a major is the right fit for you. I myself also contemplated many different avenues regarding my career path when I was in high school. It's important to understand that the major you go into college with doesn't necessarily need to be the major you finish college with. Since you are still in high school I would recommend researching the marketing field and different ways you can use a marketing degree. Then weigh the pros and cons. Also consider researching two additional fields you might be interested in, maybe a subject you perform well in during high school just to keep your options open. Consider making a LinkedIn profile to provide you with the opportunity to make connections and network with professionals in the field, so that you can use them as a resource to gain different perspectives on the field and their roles within the field. Additionally, look into job-shadowing opportunities and volunteer work that you might be able to get involved with over the summer to better understand if a major in marketing is the right fit for you.

Hi Patricia,
It's a very common experience to be undecided about your major before going into college, so know that you're not alone! I also struggled with deciding my major and ended up studying Arts & Humanities, which has little to do with my current job in product management. I would recommend exploring digital marketing since that has piqued your interest - but stay open to other majors as well. Once you're in college, you may end up discovering something completely different that you would rather do by taking classes in different areas and meeting peers in majors that you had never thought about. Many schools allow you to switch majors once you've declared your major; I changed majors twice during college. In my experience, what matters at the end of the day is that you can tell future recruiters a story about how you ended up where you are today, and what influenced your decision to choose your major or change it along the way. Keep an open mind and keep exploring!

When it comes to picking a field of study focus on what you're passionate about. If digital marketing is what you like then go for it. I do advice making a list of topics that also peak your interest or have a passion for. College is usually the time where you hone in are what drives you. If you feel that your first field of study isn't really clicking with you, don't be discouraged many go through the same thing. Just be sure to have a good grasp on other potential areas that your passionate about. Remember study what you like and don't let others force you into pursuing a field you have no drive for.
