What is a day in the life of a civil engineer like?

I am asking this question to understand more of what you do as an engineer and how it helps out the community by designing or building things that civil engineers do. #civil-engineering

Ahmad’s Answer

It is completely dependent on the civil engineer role; there are multiple displinces/career paths for the civil engineer to would work on and the Organization on which the engineer works. It might be site supervision, design, planning, cost control, risk management, procurement ..etc. The size of the Organization is another factor; in small organizations the engineer might handle most of the foregoing duties while in the big ones he/she would be allocated to certain department (specialization).

Personally, I am a civil engineer started my work as a site engineer for two years then moved to control department (planning and cost control) for another two years. during that time I got two PMI certificates (PMP and RMP) then shifted to project management consulting. So Its about doing the thing where you feel comfortable and where you enjoy what you are doing.

On the other hand there are multiple fronts on which the engineer can support the community whether through participating in designed events by sustainable development organization or by learning how to design in an environment friendly manner.

DAVID’s Answer

in a consulting engineering firm you work as teams on a particular client project
Engineers start out their career as Engineer 1, Engineer 2, Senior Engineer, Project Engineer and up to Project Manager.
A project requires engineers to prepare permits, designs, specifications, write reports, letters, prepare cost estimates, obtain bids, manage construction and assist in startup.
The goal is to complete a successful project on time and under budget, company bosses hate when you loose money when you run over budget.
So an engineer must be efficient but technical to deal with project issues.
