Patrick’s Answer

It's really great that you have a feeling about what you would like to do. Many students struggle to connect to any future career. If you feel strongly about being a Labor & Delivery Nurse, then go for it! Don't live your life wondering what might have happened if you tried. The first step is to understand what skills and training are required to be successful as a Nurse. Then develop a plan to build those skills. Many universities have dedicated Nursing schools, I know that mine did. Use your network of friends, family, teachers, coaches, etc. to help you find the right internship or job opportunity. You already have a strong network of supporters and don't be afraid to ask them for help as you get started. Follow your heart, work hard and you will find yourself with a rewarding career. Good luck!

Farrell’s Answer

Labor and delivery is a very special niche in nursing; unlike any other area. Start with a broad vision as you go into nursing. I always tell nursing students, go into Med-Surg for your first job. Learn basic assessment skills, learn lab values, and learn time management skills. Getting into the maternal-child area of a hospital can be competitive. You might have to start by going to the post-partum ward first. Keep your eye on your goal and seek out opportunities that might arise to place you in the labor and delivery world, even if it isn't the registered nurse position.

Farrell recommends the following next steps:

It's never too early to start studying anatomy and physiology!
