Should I chose my career right away or wait until I am sure?

I am a Kalmyk immigrant, so I am not sure where that puts me on the race scale. I am highly driven to not be poor like the people back home. Frankly living my whole life under the heel of the Russian government isnt the best option. #career

Gary’s Answer

If you are just starting out career wise I don't think it's a bad idea to pursue what interests you. There is no reason that I can think of that you would be locked in to your career (unless you want to become a Doctor or something that would require 8-10 years of school and training)

Be open to opportunity and embrace changes to your career that will depend on where you are in life.

Gary recommends the following next steps:

If you are in College then look for events related to your career of choice and take advantage of the opportunity to interact with people who are in the field you are interested in.
Look into an Internship. What better way to decide if your career path is your ultimate goal than to do the work (in a limited fashion)
Take advantage of your Teachers/Professors. There is a ton of experience there.
Put together a questionnaire that you can ask people in your field of interest.
Put together a list of goals that you want from a career. Do you want to travel? Do you want to interact with customers?

Edwin’s Answer

Hello Andrey,

I would suggest applying for internships so you would understand what type of career you would like to pursue. I would suggest speaking with your academic counselor in school to understand which career would suit you best!
I took classes at a community college to understand what I would like, I just took my general education classes (simple mathematics, literature, social sciences, etc.) But, I would not rush anything because it helped me get to where I am today.

Best,
Edwin

Don't feel confined to stick to one career or that you have to stick to the first job you find. Different experiences will help you navigate various options and career paths, including what you like to do and what you don't like to do. Recommend talking to other immigrants in your network about what areas/jobs interested them early on. Being new to U.S. you should look into the visa process as there are visas available for some careers, but not all.

Deepak’s Answer

Follow your effort and not necessarily your passion. This is advise given by Mark Cuban. Find something that excites you and begin putting efforts. Study successful people by reading their stories and you will be surprised there wasn't a perfect opportunity handed out to anyone in first attempt. Be ready to be honest and move quickly until you hit the right opportunity. By the way a lot of businesses are started by immigrants. Good luck.
