Well, if you have a 2-year degree vs a 4-year degree in nursing, the 4-year degree (BSN) will make more money than the ADN.

Most hospitals pay based on years experience as an RN, years experience in the specialty, and any specialty certifications. So an RN with 2 years experience as an RN and but no ICU experience and starting in the ICU would make less than an RN with 2 years experience as an RN, and 2 years experience in the ICU and CCRN Certification.

But typically, an ER nurse won't make more than an ICU nurse just by virtue of being in one department over another.

Nurses can also make more money if they work nights or weekends via shift differentials, or an addition to pay for working overnights, evenings, and weekend shifts.
