How many volunteer/interning hours should I try to have before applying for veterinarian programs?
Also anything relating to what I could have on my application that would make me more valuable, or appealing, over other candidates! #college #graduate #veterinary #veterinary-medicine #graduate-programs

Hi Morgan,
Experience and volunteering in veterinary medicine, shelters, and other animal organizations is important, but there really isn't a "minimum". A variety of experiences, with different species and in different settings would be important as well.
But veterinary programs are not just looking for people with animal experience, they are looking for individuals who are well rounded and have experiences and interests beyond animals. I'm not saying you have to be the perfect person, but some extracurricular or volunteering experiences in other areas (anything really- school plays, church activities, clubs) is important as well.
You have probably heard that grades are important, and that is true. Take as many science and math courses as you can to prepare your self for the rigors of a professional program. Competition to get into veterinary school is very tough, and there are many more applicants than available spaces.
Perhaps most important is to shadow veterinarians or veterinary technicians (or volunteer in they type of facilities that you wish to work in) to make sure it is really what you think it is. There are many wonderful experiences in the veterinary profession, but it can be difficult and messy work, and is often emotionally draining.

Every school is different but I would recommend as many hours of experience as you can get.
