It's good that you're interested in becoming an illustrator, in order to become an illustrator you need to be well versed with the digital tools used today for illustration apart from getting a relevant certification or qualification, although, in most cases the latter is seldom required you can still display your expertise with a strong portfolio which is a prerequisite apart from the indispensable quality of harboring creativity.
--Prerequisites

--Beginner
The next step is to progress on to learning niche softwares such as Autodesk Sketchbook, Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, Indesign etc.
--Intermediate
Once you have successfully completed the first two steps and you are pretty sure that you would like to make a career in the same field you can get yourself enrolled into an institute that will polish and enhance your skills.
--Advanced
