Major and Minors regarding environmental science

I am thinking about majoring in Environmental Science with a minor in film and a minor in business. Does this seem absurd? #film #environmental-science

Hi Emma

I actually majored in environmental science (received a BS and focused on Geology of Climate Change) and minored in Business. I found my combination of studies to be incredibly relevant and interesting to recruiters in a variety of different industries.

Right now, I am using my Business minor more than anything else, as I am working as a management consultant. However, I firmly believe that my environmental understanding and passions will become increasingly relevant as we face the global megatrend of climate change/resource scarcity. Having an educational background in a relevant science field will certainly help you build your personal brand as someone who can contribute important insights to organizations facing environmental concerns.

As for the film minor, I think it's excellent that you found another academic interest! As the professionals mentioned above, documentary filmmaking it certainly an option that you can explore.

Enjoy taking classes that genuinely interest you! I spent my years at college taking science, business, and dance classes, and although I am not applying each of those areas of study to my career right now, I could not be happier with my decisions.

Best of luck for your bright future!

Hi Emma;
It's a great question and it's not absurd at all. Just follow your passions. Mark's advice above is quite astute and practical. Definitely look into the world of documentary filmmaking, not only about how you could participate in it, but also study the rich history of environmental documentaries produced over the last few decades (not just recent ones). Best of luck.

Mark’s Answer

Hi Emma,
Actually, your choice for a career sounds very good. We do need guidance regarding our global warming. More documentaries should be filmed about our environmental problems, and how to fix them. Believe me, you won't regret learning about business. Who knows, maybe you'll organize your own which will save the lives of animals and children throughout the world. Beginning in Africa.
Best wishes.
