Will I receive help with my career once I graduate?

I plan on becoming a psychiatrist and I want to know what I will be offered once I finish Job Corps? I am currently doing rehabilitation technician trade classes. #job #psychology #career-counseling #graduate-school #career #scholarship

Malisa’s Answer

This is a question specifically for the job corps program. However, I would suggest seeking and finding a mentor as you start your new career. This will allow for you to seek advice when you have a situation that may not have been covered in a text book example. In addition see if your school has a graduate support program. In any career having reliable co-workers, mentors and friends helps when learning a new job.

Arshia’s Answer

Dear Kenya,

Being a psychiatrist is a rewarding career although a lengthy one to go through. After your undergraduate degree, you will need to pursue medical school and upon finishing medical school, apply to psychiatry residency programs where you will complete your training as a psychiatry resident. Depending on where you go for school, you will be working with doctors, professors, mentors, colleagues, etc. I recommend speaking with the program director once you're there regarding what your career goals are as a psychiatrist and what specialty and type of practice you would like to have for yourself.

If you can provide more detail in your original question, contributors like myself will be able to provide guidance that is more focused.

Dear Kenya,
It's great that you have such a clear idea of what you want to pursue in your career. I can't speak to the Job Corps question, but I would suggest you speak to someone there who is knowledgeable about what they might offer you.

If you want to be a Psychiatrist you will need to go to medical school, so that should be your educational goal and will have implications for what you study in college and your plans after that. Some people practising in that field are Psychologists, which generally needs a PhD, so that also means a specific educational path. There are also other routes to helping people that might not require a doctoral degree, including Social Work. I'm assuming that you have looked into these different but related paths.

Best of luck,
Mary-Jane
