How much do biomedical engineers get to help people? (ex: design new and better artificial organs/prosthetics; help a blind person see or a deaf person hear)

I plan on going to school to study biomedical engineering. I'm a really caring person and I need to have a career where I can help people, so I would like to know how good of a fit biomedical engineering would be for me. #biomedical-engineering

Yes in biomedical engineering you definitely help people - that is the whole point! Though the engineers never (or hardly ever) meet the patients, you definitely spend time with the doctors and nurses that you are designing tools for, and you can hear it from them when they have success helping people by using the products you are working on. Hope that helps!
Thank you comment icon Wow I forgot I even posted that! I'm already all set to attend Marquette University in the fall for biomedical engineering. Thank you for your answer! Holly

This might be the field for you then. I used to work as a Biomedical engineer for ophthalmic equipment manufacturing company. I provided technical assistance during live cataract surgeries working beside surgeons. You get to help nurses and doctors on how to operate technologies.

There's even more if start your own company and build technology to help the diseased or disabled.
